Build on the Right Foundation – Matt. 7:24-27
Jesus, with his understanding of carpentry, provided a practical illustration of true faith. He presented two builders who were diligently constructing their houses. The wise builder, representing those who hear Jesus’ words and put them into practice, chooses a strong and solid foundation.
When the inevitable storms of life arose, this house built upon the rock remains steadfast and resilient.
In contrast, the foolish builder represents those who hear Jesus’ teachings and know God’s conditions for salvation but do not act upon them. They opt for an unstable foundation, building their house on sand. This foolish builder invested significant time and resources in constructing a life that appeared good. However, the actual structure was built on sand, making it vulnerable to collapse with a great crash when the winds blew and the water rose.
Both houses may appear similar for a while, as a moral life of good works can give the illusion of stability. However, when the inevitable storms of life hit –whether in the form of sudden troubles, inner turmoil, outside pressure, it could also be the tsunami of death and the subsequent eternal judgment – the true strength of the foundation becomes evident during these times. When the storms of life hit, one house stood strong and resilient, while the other fell with a great crash.
A life rooted in genuine faith bears good fruit. Deep gratitude for God’s grace and goodness spills over into passionate, faith-filled prayer. Through an intimate and personal relationship with God, one gains knowledge of His truth, enabling wisdom to discern between truth and error. Humility and dependence on God are the trademarks of genuine believers. Godly wisdom requires humble self-examination, persistent prayer, and godly discernment. God embodies discernment. Every aspect of life is impacted by the supernatural life-giving power of Jesus.
The biggest tragedy in life would be to build, craft, live, and love on a foundation of sinking sand, not realizing until too late the need for a solid rock foundation. Christ’s words graciously invites both the wise and the foolish builders. “… He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance’. Those whom God saves act on His words. The foolish builder ignores Jesus’ call to repentance, while the wise builder seeks Jesus to receive eternal life. The foolish person ignores the warnings, procrastinates on repentance, on turning towards God, and attempts to compensate for a weak foundation of faith with an impressive outward façade. On the other hand the wise person exercises diligence before the stormy clouds gather and constructs his house upon the solid Rock.
A believer rooted in Christ thinks and lives differently from other people. The transformation that Jesus brings is not superficial; it goes beyond a mere display of rituals. God desires our hearts, and He does not want us to become self-satisfied. The Sermon on the Mount elevates the demands of the Old Testament Law, to help us recognize our need to turn to Jesus. And the Holy Spirit creates new life within us, enabling us to live according to the teachings of Jesus. This is the life that God blesses.
The foundation of your life is crucial. A life based on knowledge without a personal commitment to Christ will be swept away. As you have studied this passage, you have been granted a magnificent understanding of eternal truth. Do you equate knowledge or simply doing the right things with truly following Jesus? Will you merely listen to this message and move on, or will you respond in a way that yields to God’s generous revelation of truth? God can be trusted when troubles arise. The problems and pressures that wise builders face only strengthen their confidence in God and His love. Their lives are securely “hidden with Christ in God”.
This is the great hope and security of God’s children. Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explained that no one can keep the Law. Only Jesus Christ has fully kept it. Has your inability to satisfy God’s demands brought you to Christ?
Stop trying to do the impossible and instead acknowledge your need for Jesus. God not only provides us with the righteousness we cannot earn, but He also equips us with His Spirit so we can live a new life. Look to Him for discernment and humility, recognizing your own needs. Pray with confidence, asking God to equip you to live a life of love built on Jesus Himself – who is the solid rock of our faith foundation.
Which road are you walking on? Now is the time to decide and choose. It is never too late to turn back to God. Take a few minutes to introspect your life and see which road you are walking: the wide high way, which is not recommended, or the narrow way of Jesus?
