“To serve is to love, and to love is to follow Christ.”
The life of Jesus Christ is the greatest example of selfless service the world has ever known. He did not come to be served, but to serve. In today’s fast-moving world, people often focus on success, money, and personal achievement. However, true greatness is found not in power or fame, but in service. To serve with the heart of Jesus means to love others selflessly, forgive freely, and help those in need without expecting anything in return.
So how can we cultivate this heart within us?
1) Humble Action
Following Jesus’ example to serve rather than be served, often helping the “least of these.”
Serving with a Christ-like heart begins with humility. Philippians 2:5–7 says,
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus… He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.”
Jesus, though Lord of all, chose to serve. Humility is not weakness; it is strength under God’s control. Pride creates conflict, but humility builds peace.
James 4:6 says,
“God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.”
Therefore, a humble heart invites God’s grace.
2) Compassionate Love
Treating others with kindness and mercy just as Christ did, regardless of what they deserve.
Serving with the heart of Christ means reflecting His character in our actions. It means choosing compassion over fear, hope over despair, and sacrifice over comfort. Just as Christ reached out to the sick, the broken, and the outcast, we too must extend care and comfort to those battling illness, loneliness, and hardship.
3) Selfless Giving
Offering our time and resources to meet the needs of others, even when it goes unnoticed.
Serving with the heart of Jesus means showing kindness in small daily actions. It may be helping someone who is struggling, listening patiently to someone who is hurting, respecting elders, parents, and teachers, or sharing what we have with those in need. Even a simple smile, a gentle word, or a helping hand can make a difference.
Service does not always require great sacrifices; it begins with a willing and loving heart.
4) Daily Devotion
Allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our actions so that we reflect Christ’s nature.
When Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, He showed that no act of service is too small when done with love. True service is not about recognition or praise; it is about putting others before ourselves.
Not everyone is called to stand on a stage or lead a ministry, but everyone can be faithful. Daily devotion places Christ first, aligns our thoughts with His will, and prepares us to serve others with a heart like His. When our lives are rooted in prayer and faith, our actions naturally reflect His love.
Conclusion
Service is not just an activity; it is a way of life. It transforms not only the lives of those we help but also our own hearts. May our lives become a testimony of His love, bringing light and hope to the world through selfless service. For when we serve others with love, we truly serve God.
The Word of God encourages us:
“Serve one another humbly in love.” — Galatians 5:13
Service becomes meaningful when it flows from a pure and willing heart.
